94th-minute equaliser for Sunderland vs Arsenal in 2–2 draw
On 8 November 2025, Sunderland played host to Arsenal in a thrilling encounter at the Stadium of Light, which ended in a 2-2 draw. In a previous article we discussed if the Black Cats of Sunderland would be able to cause issues for the Premier League leaders and they did not disappoint. In the last few weeks Arsenal has been in strong form and are arguably the best team in Europe. However, Sunderland, newly promoted to the top tier, has also been impressive in their early-season performances, causing challenges for established teams.
The match began with Sunderland taking the lead through Dan Ballard’s powerful strike in the first half. The goal came as a surprise to Arsenal, who had been enjoying a solid run of form and had one of the best defensive records in the league. This goal sent Sunderland into the break with a 1-0 advantage, leaving Arsenal to regroup and strategise for the second half.
As the second half unfolded, Arsenal displayed their quality and determination, pressing Sunderland in search of an equaliser. Bukayo Saka levelled the score with a great finish after a tackle by Decland Rice. This was followed shortly by a great goal from Leandro Trossard that put Arsenal ahead 2-1. The Gunners appeared to be in control, and it seemed that they would secure the three points against their resilient opponents.
However, the drama was far from over. In the dying moments of the match, substitute Brian Brobbey emerged as Sunderland’s saviour. In the 94th minute, he capitalised on a scramble in the box, beating Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya to the ball and slotting it home. This last-gasp equaliser not only salvaged a point for Sunderland but also demonstrated their fighting spirit and capability to challenge the league’s elite.
Despite the draw, Arsenal remains at the top of the Premier League, extending their lead to six points. This match highlighted Sunderland’s potential to disrupt the established order of the league, raising questions about their ability to sustain this level of performance as the season progresses. Arsenal will be looking to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures, while Sunderland will aim to build on this momentum in their quest for survival in the top flight.
